On August 25, Asheville City Council is expected to vote on a redesign that cuts some bus routes so others can run more often.

    What is at Stake

    The draft adds service to some routes by taking it from others. For residents who cannot drive, losing a route may mean losing access to groceries, medical care, shelter, family, and friends.

    We know what people will lose. The city has not shown that the new network will make up for those losses.

    Council should not take away existing access for ridership increases the city has not shown it can achieve.

    How the Proposal Reached This Point
    • City Council directed transit staff to shift resources from geographic coverage toward higher ridership and greater frequency.
    • The proposed network increases frequency in selected areas while eliminating service from other neighborhoods and destinations.
    • Council must now decide whether the identified losses are acceptable and whether the proposed alternatives are realistic.
